1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Coupe "Gullwing"
Chassis # 198.040.5500701
Overview
Garage 42 is privileged to work with our client in sourcing this extremely special 300SL.
Out of third generation, single family ownership, this Gullwing has now been acquired by a new family to continue the stewardship and see to it this part of automotive history lives on.
5500701 arrived in port in New York on September 15, 1955. From there it was purchased by the original owners in Indianapolis Indiana through Auto Imports, LTD. Original documents show a 1954 Mercedes-Benz 180 sedan was traded in towards the purchase price of $7,787.00. The original receipt, bank check, and bill of sale remained with the car through it's entire life, and remains so today!
The car was used sparingly for 68 years, and shows just 24,000 miles on it's original numbers-matching NSL engine. The car was always well serviced, and has been passed down through three generations of original family ownership.
Still clothed in it's original L1 Blue Plaid interior, the inside of this example is truly a lesson in originality and preservation. Patina abounds, everything is worn in, and nothing is worn out.
The exterior of the car was treated to a re-spray of DB180 Silver-Grey Metallic sometime in the early 1970's and paint meter readings range from 5-7mils. Lacquer paint truly has a life and look that no plastic or water based paint can replicate, and the lines of a 300SL exemplify that characteristic like no other.
This car truly is special, and we are so excited to assist our client in his ownership experience.
